Montessori Dementia Program Participants Making A Difference

Christie Gardens Retirement Community, located in Toronto’s Davenport neighbourhood is working to improve the mealtime experience for their residents and has recently implemented the CHOICE+ plan in their courtyard community to track their efforts. As described in their education materials, CHOICE+ is ‘an innovative program that enhances the mealtime experience in long-term care homes by focusing on relationships at mealtimes and creating an enjoyable environment.’

Sarah Wu, PhD candidate, Department of Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, Alzheimer Society of Canada Doctoral Fellow, and Director, Board of Directors for the Toronto Council on Aging is the main contact for the CHOICE+ program. Here is what she had to say about two Christie Gardens volunteers who recently completed our Montessori Dementia Program and were a part of the CHOICE+ initiative:

“I want to tell you that I spoke to the CHOICE+ auditor the other day and she said that you two were absolutely wonderful in the dining room. She said she has never seen that level of care and attention given to residents by volunteers before in all of the audits she’s conducted (she’s done several dozen at this point in other homes). We are very lucky to have the both of you on our team and appreciate all the knowledge and passion you bring.”
