The coronavirus pandemic has exposed a number of weaknesses and shortfalls that have been long-standing in long term care. This is an opportunity for both the provincial and federal government to provide leadership and direction. Health care delivery is a provincial responsibility, but the federal government plays a significant role in funding, assisting and overseeing those services. “I recognize the system is broken and we are going to fix the system,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said as he announced that a commission will be launched in September 2020 to review the impacts and responses to COVID19 in long term care
It is unfortunate that it has taken a global health crisis to expose the drastic need for changes in public health policy in Canada.
