Moving Toward a More Person-Centered Model of Care

A recent report from the Canadian Armed Forces detailed disturbing conditions in some Ontario long term care homes: staff behaving aggressively and inappropriately, residents not being properly cared for, fed, bathed, or moved from their beds.

These troubling findings are not new to advocates and families who have long been calling for change. Experts say the coronavirus pandemic could provide an opportunity to implement some essential changes.

The solution needs to focus on a change in culture, away from the current medical approach to care to an emotion-based model of care that is more person-centered providing meaningful connections, a sense of community and improved quality of life.
